There have been eight suicides by
Italian prison inmates already this year plus one by a prison
officer, warders' union UILPA said Monday.
"It is carnage, even worse than last year and the situation is
worsening with prisons 16,000 inmates over capacity and the
prison officer force depleted by 18,000 units, with health
services deteriorating, logistical shortfalls, staffing crises,
and structural and organizational deficiencies," said UILPA
General Secretary Gennarino De Fazio.
"2025 has started even worse than the tragic 2024," he said
after a prisoner took his own life in Cagliari, the second
suicide in the Sardinian capital's penitentiary this year.
"We are now sadly running at the rate of one suicide almost
every two days," it is a full-blown massacre".
