Three climate activists of he Ultima
Generazione (Last Generation, UG) group were found guilty
Tuesday of painting the extrenal walls of the Senate in Rome red
on January 2 2023 in a stunt aimed at raising awareness of the
climate crisis.
A Rome court sentenced them to a suspended term of eight months
in jail for "aggravate damage".
They were also ordered o pay a fine of 60,000 euros to the
Senate, the culture ministry and Rome city council, the
Campidoglio (Capitol).
UG says it uses easy to wash off paint in its stunts, which have
included pouring it on famous artworks in the Uffizi and
elsewhere, such as Botticelli's Spring.
The group also glued itself to the iconic Laocoon statue in the
Vatican, in August 2022.
