Following the death on Tuesday of
German ex-finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble Europe has lost one
of its strongest supporters, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday.
"I am close to the Cdu for the death of Wolfgang Schäuble.
Europe loses one of its convinced supporters," posted Tajani on
X, formerly Twitter.
"A strong man who even survived an assassination attempt. A
point of reference for the EPP. A reformist, he understood the
need to fight the mafia organisations involved in migrant
traffic," he added.
Schäuble, a member of Germany's Conservative Cdu party, was the
longest-serving member of the Bundestag, from 1972 to the
present.
He also served as finance minister under Chancellor Angela
Merkel for eight years, helping to steer the eurozone through
the debt crisis.
Prior to that, as Interior Minister under Helmut Kohl (1989-91)
he played a key role in negotiating German unification after the
fall of the Berlin Wall.
