Pope Francis called the parish of the
only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, dedicated to the Holy
Family, on Friday for the second time since the outbreak of the
war between Hamas and Israel, parish priest Gabriel Romanelli
told Tv2000's Jerusalem correspondent on Saturday.
The pontiff had called Romanelli, who is in Bethlehem because he
was unable to return to Gaza after the outbreak of the war, the
first time on Monday.
Romanelli reported that, after several attempts, the pope
managed to speak to the deputy head of parish who is still in
Gaza, Father Youssef.
Francis asked how the people there were, inquiring specifically
about the many Christian and Muslim children being cared for by
Missionaries of Charity nuns, and said that he was doing all he
can to end the bloodshed.
