A rare painting by Italian-Argentine
Spacialist artist Lucio Fontana has come up for sale at
Sotheby's in New York next month.
The work, on show Thursday and Friday in the Milan branch of the
auction house, is one of the 38 space concept paintings in his
famed End of God series and one of only five in white, two of
which are still in private hands while the other two are in the
permanent collections of the Prada Foundation in Milan and
Tokyo's contemporary art museum.
It has been valued at $18-22 million.
It is the first time in five years that a Space Concept End of
God has appeared on the market and the first since 2004 for a
white version.
"It's a masterpiece of one of the greatest series that Lucio
Fontana ever executed. Works of this kind only arrive rarely on
the market and are considered fundamental for Fontana collectors
and for Italian postwar art," said Claudia Dwek, Sotheby's
European contemporary art expert.
