Twenty million euros are to be
allocated to the defence ministry for the implementation of
plans to create new pre-removal centres for migrants and failed
asylum seekers awaiting repatriation in several Italian regions
as part of efforts to clamp down on irregular migration to
Italy, according to the text of a decree published in the
Official Gazzette on Wednesday.
Under the plans, existing structures such as unused barracks can
also be used.
The decree mandates the defence ministry, through its competent
military engineering units, the armed forces and asset
management company Difesa Servizi spa, to design and build the
structures identified in the plan "as works intended for
national defence and security".
The government has said it wants there to be a pre-removal
centre in every one of Italy's 20 regions.
Currently there are 10.
