French President Emmanuel Macron must lift any secrecy surrounding a French military base on Corsica from which a jet may have flown and shot a missile possibly aimed at Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi that may have downed an Italian airliner over Ustica in June 1980 killing all 81 on board, ex premier Giuliano Amato told the foreign press Tuesday.
"To the young French president Macron, who was two years old at the time, I ask that he free us from the Solenzara issue (the military base in Corsica from which the fighter jet that possibly launched the missile against the Dc9 may have departed, according to one of the investigative leads, ed.)," said the former Socialist prime minister.
Amato says the French missile at Gaddafi hypothesis is the most likely explanation for the disaster, but he does not have the truth.
Gaddafi was not in the targeted plane because he was allegedly tipped off by late Socialist premier Bettino Craxi, Amato has hinted.
