The family of Giulio Regeni, an
Italian students tortured to death in Cairo in early 2016, on
Sunday urged the four Egyptian intelligence officers indicted in
the case to present themselves at the next trial hearing Monday
and not to run away from Italian justice like cowards.
The trial has stalled after Egypt refused to reveal the legal
abodes of the four so they could be served notice of the
proceedings.
Regeni, a 28-year-old Cambridge doctoral student from Friuli
researching Cairo street unions, was picked up as a suspected
spy and tortured so badly his mother only recognised him by the
tip of his nose, in late January-early February 2016.
Regeni family lawyer Alessandra Ballerini said on Facebook
Sunday:
"Tariq Sabir, Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim, Uhsam Helmi, Magdi
Ibrahim Abedal Sharif. You are cognizant of the trial, present
yourselves tomorrow 3 April, at the hearing at the Rome Court,
before the judge, face the trial...for the abduction, torture
and murder of Giulio Regeni. Don't be cowards. The Italians
demand #truthforgiulioregeni#truth and #justice for#Giulio
Regeni".
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah e-Sisi has repeatedly vowed to
help achieve justice in the case but his words have had no
follow-up.
