President Sergio Mattarella, the
titular head of the Italian judiciary, on Wednesday stressed the
importance of judicial independence while respecting the
reciprocal roles of different State powers.
Mattarella cited the outgoing chair of the Cassation Court,
Pietro Curzio, in his remarks to the Supreme Council of
Magistrates (CSM), of which he is the titular head.
He said Curzio's actions and analyses have always been
"characterised by rigour in his evaluations, with important
considerations such as the reference to the need to ensure legal
certainty and uniformity of the criteria of judgement, as well
as the exhortation to mutual respect of roles and the
distinction of functions between the powers of the State.
"It should not be forgotten how respect for this condition is
closely related to independence".
