An Italian Serie B volleyball referee has said she has been body-shamed into quitting her job, she said on social media Wednesday.
The woman, 24-year-old Martina Scavelli, says she is tired of being discriminated for being overweight.
"I can no longer stand being measured and weighed like they do with cows!", she wrote.
Scavelli addressed black Italian volleyball star Paolo Egonu who caused a stir by saying Italy was a racist country at the Sanremo Song Festival last week.
The ref, who lives in Catanzaro in Calabria, wrote "you're black, and I'm fat, but we both face the same kind of discrimination".
Scavelli said she had failed body mass index (BMI) and waist measurement tests that would have sent her into regional volleyball from Serie B, and that she preferred to quit rather than try to meet the "unrealistic and unfair" standards.
