The doctor who treated fugitive Mafia
boss Matteo Messina Denaro before his capture in a Palermo
cancer clinic after 30 years on the run Monday has been placed
under investigation on suspicion of helping the super criminal
evade capture under an alias.
Messina Denaro, 59, had taken on the identity of Andrea
Bonafede, a real patient of the doctor, 70-year-old Alfonso
Tumbarello.
Tumbarello was for years the GP at Campobello di Mazara, near
Messina Denaro's home town of Castelvetrano, until he retired
last month.
He is suspected of swapping the two identities on his records.
Police on Monday searched the doctor's home and former studio.
Messina Denaro, aka Diabolik after the comics super villain
anti-hero, was Italy's most wanted man and his arrest is seen as
a major blow to Cosa Nostra.
