The minimum time between the second jab of the COVID-19 vaccine and the booster has been brought forward to four months, according to a health ministry circular letter.
The minimum span between the second dose and the third had been five months.
The circular letter said COVID-19 Emergency Commissioner Francesco Figliuolo will decide when the change actually kicks in.
The health ministry has also given the all clear for 16- and 17-year-olds to have the booster jab for COVID-19.
The third dose of the coronavirus vaccine had only been okayed for adults aged 18 and over.
Clinically fragile minors aged 12 to 15 will also be able to have a third jab as of December 27.
Italian medicines agency AIFA will make a decision on giving the booster to 12-to-15-year-olds in general by the end of January, sources said.
Earlier this month Italy this started vaccinating children aged five to 11 with doses of the Pfizer vaccine that are a third of those given to older people.
Health Undersecretary Andrea Costa has said that he expected vaccines for children under five to be available in March-April
