Rome's historic Capannelle race
course is to close next year, operator HippoGroup said
Wednesday.
It said this was due to the "position" assumed by Rome city
council on the concession contract "retroactively quantified as
over two and a half million euros a year".
It also said it was linked to the duration of the contract.
Snaitech CEO Fabio Schiavolin said the announced closure was
a "great pity" and urged the institutions to intervene to keep
the iconic track open.
Once a mecca for racing fans, the numbers attending
Capannelle races have dwindled in recent years.
Its past visitors have included Queen Elizabeth II and late
statesman Giulio Andreotti.
