Carlo Calenda was sworn in Tuesday as
industry minister, replacing Federica Guidi who quit over
allegations of conflict of interest.
The former deputy industry minister and until now Italy's
permanent representative to the European Union was sworn in
by President Sergio Mattarella.
Calenda, 43, is a former Ferrari and Sky Italia manager who
served as foreign missions chief for industrial employers' group
Confindustria for many years.
He is the son of economist Fabio Calenda and filmmaker
Cristina Comencini, and the grandson of cinema great Luigi
Comencini who directed him, aged 10, in a TV adaptation of
classic children's book Cuore in 1983.
Guidi resigned as minister at the end of March over a phone
tap in which she could be heard discussing a government
amendment on a Basilicata oil project with her boyfriend,
oil-industry entrepreneur Gianluca Gemelli.
Gemelli is being probed for conspiracy to commit corruption
and falsely claiming influence over a public official in order
to obtain bribes.
Guidi is not under investigation in the probe.
