Filming for the upcoming
television show The Young Pope will head to Venice on Monday,
the setting for several scenes in Paolo Sorrentino's
eight-episode series starring Jude Law and Diane Keaton.
The scenes will be based around St. Mark's Square and Campo
San Vio, and will involve night time filming. During shooting
the areas are set to be completely sealed off.
The series, a joint production of Sky, HBO and Canal+,
focuses on the pope's complex character and how he balances his
rigid conservatism with his deep compassion for the poor and
weak. It also explores and analyses power dynamics in the
Vatican.
Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said that he will meet
Sorrentino during his stay in the city to discuss the formation
of a club of actors and artists aimed at helping the city of
Venice boost its cultural profile.
