The official medal to commemorate the pope's extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy will be on sale to the public as of January 4, Vatican daily L'Osservatore Romano said Tuesday.
The medal designed by sculptress Mariangela Crisciotti will be on sale at the Holy See's asset-management agency APSA within the Vatican City, and at Editrice Vaticana bookstore.
The medal features the pope's coat of arms surrounded with the Latin motto 'Iubilaeum extraordinarium misericordiae 2015' (Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy 2015) and the artist's signature.
On the other side, the medal features a detail from Rembrandt's painting Return of the Prodigal Son, which is housed in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Each numbered medal comes with a certificate guaranteeing its authenticity, stamped by the Italian mint. The pope's Jubilee or Holy Year runs from December 2015 to November 2016.
