The premiere of superstar dancer
Roberto Bolle's Manon at Milan's La Scala opera house was
cancelled Thursday because of last-minute industrial action.
The performance was initially slated to go ahead with
reduced sets and lighting due to a strike among stage
technicians belonging to Italy's biggest trades union
confederation, CGIL.
But technicians belonging to the other unions, UIL, FIALS
and CISL, failed to respect a deal and did not turn up for work.
Bolle and his co-star Svetlana Zakharova, the ballet corps
of La Scala and the orchestra conducted by David Coleman on
Wednesday confirmed they were going to perform.
"La Scala is sorry for the disruption but considered
enabling the public to see the performance in any case to be a
priority," the opera house said.
The strike was called by CGIL in protest over the decision
by theatre management not to take on new technical hires.
The 1974 ballet Manon is choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan
to music by Jules Massenet and based on the 1731 novel Manon
Lescaut by Abbé Prévost.
