Ten contemporary masters will
show their works alongside Michelangelo masterpieces at the home
of his David, Florence's Galleria dell'Accademia, next year.
On the one hand, Michelangelo, Giotto, Taddeo Gaddi, Paolo
Uccello, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Perugino, on the other 10
among the most renowned, thought-provoking and hotly debated
contemporary artists such as Marina Abramovic, Cai Guo-Qiang,
Maurizio Cattelan, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Bruce
Nauman, Richard Prince, Gerhard Richter and Cindy Sherman.
The exhibition, at the moment temporarily titled "The great
masters of contemporary art compared to Michelangelo" is being
curated by Fabio Cavallucci, director of the Centre for
contemporary art Luigi Pecci in Prato, and Angelo Tartuferi,
director of the Galleria dell'Accademia.
"The project is born out of a strong sense of displacement
towards a force in the present that overcomes history" said the
two curators.
The works of contemporary artists will not only survive the
comparison with Michelangelo - said Cavallucci and Tartuferi -
but they will also add elements of surprise and offer fresh,
unprecedented interpretations, so that the ancient masterpieces
will be enriched with new meaning for the visitors".
The show will run from June 14, 2016 to January 8 2017.
