Icelandic experimental singer-songwriter Bjork appeared in Rome for the first time in seven years at the Auditorium Parco della Musica on Wednesday.
The performance - less a concert than a work of art - saw the elfin 49-year old appear on stage in a bright red dress and shoes and with a mask over her eyes to sing of her pain following her bitter 2013 split with artist Matthew Barney after 13 years together.
This was the inspiration for her recent heartbreak album Vulnicura, which provided the backbone of the concert.
Hers was the only voice on stage, accompanied by a string orchestra, a percussionist and an electronic musician. Projections of images of insects and reptiles mating and reproducing accompanied the performance as the public listened entranced.
