Lamborghini head Stephan Winkelmann
on Thursday showed auto workers plans to manufacture a sports
utility vehicle in Italy, involving an estimated 1,200 new jobs.
Winkelmann showed the plan one day earlier to Premier
Matteo Renzi and his cabinet, and in return received tax breaks
of more than 80 million euros.
Lamborghini, which is owned by Volkswagen, said Italy had
beaten a bid from Slovakia to build the SUV there.
Winkelmann told auto workers at the Lamborghini plant that
the new model will also be produced in Sant'Agata Bolognese, the
luxury automaker is based.
"We have fought for the production here in Sant'Agata, not
only for reasons related to 'Made in Italy', but also the
territory, the passion and excellence of our craftsmanship, but
also because we have the opportunity to achieve stability," said
Winkelmann.
He said the company will invest hundreds of millions of
euros in the SUV production line.
