The European Parliament's Environment Committee (ENVI) has decided, with 67 votes in favour, 14 against, and 3 abstentions, to open negotiations with Member States on the regulation of new genomic techniques.
The first negotiation meeting between the two co-legislators, mediated by the European Commission (commonly referred to as a "trilogue"), will take place on May 6.
The European Parliament agreed on its negotiating mandate in April 2024, during the previous parliamentary term, while the EU Council only adopted its position on March 14.
Negotiations on behalf of the European Parliament will be led by the rapporteur for the dossier, Swedish MEP Jessica Polfjärd of the European People's Party (EPP).
The two negotiating positions remain far apart, especially on issues related to traceability and labelling requirements for new genomic techniques, as well as on the granting of patents.
#IMCAP "Co-funded by the European Union. However, the views expressed belong solely to the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible."
