The Bell Tower of St. Mark in Venice
has reopened to the public, just in time for the culmination of
Carnival on 'Fat Tuesday'.
The iconic monument has reopened after a series of renovation
works, also in time to allow the many Carnival visitors to
admire the city and the lagoon from above, the Procuratoria
della Basilica Marciana said Monday.
Work was carried out on the elevator system, with the
replacement of the winch, over 70 years old, and of the
compensation chain, revision and adaptation of the electrical
system, to continue to guarantee maximum safety and efficiency.
At the same time, cleaning work was carried out on the bronze
sculptures on the outside of the loggia and the cleaning of the
windows and internal rooms, of the brass parts of the elevator,
and of the bells.
The bell lodge can now be admired in its entirety, with the
bells exposed and free from superficial pollution.
