The salvage operation to lift the
Bayesian luxury yacht off the Sicilian seabed will start on May
3, officials said on Wednesday.
The Bayesian sank in extreme weather off Porticello harbour in
August 2024, causing the death of seven people, including
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter
Hannah.
The recovery operation, which will be carried out by the Hebo
Maritiemservice and Smit International companies using Hebo
Lift2 and Hebo Lift 10 units, is expected to take 20 to 25 days.
For safety reasons, the yacht's mast will be cut before it is
raised off the seabed at a depth of 50 metres.
The wreck will be placed at the disposal of prosecutors in
Termini Imerese for their investigation once it has been brought
back to the surface.
Three crew members are under investigation in Italy for
suspected multiple negligent manslaughter and causing a
shipwreck, including captain James Cutfield.
All the victims were passengers except for the boat's cook
Recaldo Thomas.
Lynch's wife Angela Baraces, whose company owned the Bayesian,
was among 15 survivors.
