A parish priest was attacked after
Sunday Mass near Cosenza in Calabria, the home of the
'Ndrangheta mafia, after preaching against drugs in his homily,
the diocese said Tuesday.
The cleric, Don Guido Quintieri, was assaulted by two men after
preaching against the spread of the drug trade in small mountain
communities like his at Bonifati, a village with a population of
just over 1,500 souls.
"The voice of Don Guido - said a note from the diocese - has
been raised against indifference and silence, calling everyone
to responsibility, solidarity and respect for the dignity of
each person.
"We express full solidarity with him and the parish community,
demonstrating closeness and support in this moment of trial".
The diocese voiced condemnation for "every form of violence" and
recalled "the indispensable value of peace and harmony"
stressing "that every gesture, every word, every action must be
a sower of reconciliation and hope."
The local bishop also voiced solidarity with Father Quintieri
and condemned the attack.
