It is common sense to ban the Islamic
veil in public spaces in Italy, League leader Matteo Salvini
said after the right-wing party filed a bill banning the veil
and setting jail terms of up to two years for husbands who force
their wives or daughters to wear it.
"A common sense proposal from the League against those who do
not respect our culture and the principles of Western freedom,"
said Salvini, whose party is often accused of being
anti-immigrant.
"And zero tolerance for those who oppressively force women and
girls to wear the veil, with prison and a stop to citizenship
requests".
The bill proposes a ban on wearing in public places clothing
"suitable for hiding the face, as in the case of the burqa or
niqab".
It envisages two-year jail terms and a loss of the right to
request citizenship for men who force women to wear the veil.
