Home favourite Alex De Minaur will
face Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open
after the world number eight beat world number 42 Alex Michelsen
of the US 6-0 7-6 6-3 in the round of 16 Monday.
Sinner, 23, is aiming to defend the title he won last year
before also winning the US Open.
The South Tyrolean continued his Australian Open title defence
on Monday, beating Denmark's Holger Rune's 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to
reach the quarter-finals despite feeling unwell.
Having lost the second set, Sinner needed a medical timeout in
the third, amid intense heat in Melbourne. But he showed his
characteristic mental strength to ride out the difficult moment
and bring home the result.
Sinner's compatriot Lorenzo Sonego is also in the last-eight
after beating 19-year-old American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-2, 3-6,
6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first
time.
